STEMing your Future; A Post 16 Careers Event

I attended a post 16 careers event yesterday at Hungerhill School. “STEMing your future” was about connecting students to employer partners, who were providing career paths for UTC students.

Doncaster University Technical College (UTC) specialises in engineering and creative and digital technologies. Their aim is to produce the next generation of highly skilled engineers and designers to help facilitate the future prospects of businesses, enabling them to thrive in the years to come.

By Spring 2020, Doncaster UTC will join Brighter Futures Learning Partnership Trust, who is a multi-academy trust. They are already established with a number of primary schools and Hungerhill School, where this event took place.

For Key Stage 5 students, there are a number of pathways that can be taken and when choosing subjects that encompass the STEM field, Doncaster UTC has outlined the ways to in which this can be accomplished effectively.

Some of the companies who will be working on the STEM curriculum are as follows:

· Agenmaspark

· Engie

· Global Media

· Meetupcall

· NHS Doncaster

· PolyPipe

· Penine Stone

· Skanska

· The University of Sheffield – The AMRC Training Centre

· Volker Rail

· Wabtec

Doncaster UTC has the next generation of students at the heart of everything they teach. Learning in a way that is different to mainstream schools, extending opportunities to work with the businesses as mentioned above, accessing real work experience and excellent teaching and greater support are the integral principles of Doncaster UTC.

In addition, 85% of students have said that attending a UTC has made them feel more confident in the world of work.

It made me feel so proud of how our youth are so inquisitive and interested in prospering not only for themselves but for the betterment of their surroundings. As a STEM Ambassador, I connected with the businesses, many of which I have liaised with in past events, and with prospective students. Overall, I took away a lot away from the experience but the main feeling I absorbed was that Doncaster has so much to offer. There are so many opportunities for people to learn, grow and excel. It really is the place to be – bursting with so much!
